I’ve heard calls for a better defense. My answer is replace Rio Ferdinand and Manchester United will get instantly stronger.

Granted, he’s big and intimidating, but in my opinion he needs to improve his technique or Sir Alex should replace him. Some will point to the great defensive plays that he has made and he does make some good ones… But I ask you to rewind the Tivo/DVR/Tape to 5-10 seconds earlier and you’ll find Rio missing the easy play, being out of position, or otherwise being fooled. Don’t scoff! You’ll see him caught flat-footed. So I’m over-dramatizing it, but the point I’m trying to make is that a lot of the discomfort we feel in the middle is due to the play of Ferdinand. He’s flat out lazy sometimes, and because of it I’ve seen goals scored against United as Rio looked on. Oh, and who can forget the game when Rio was having a blood sugar problem? The med-tech comes on the field and produces juice and cookies — too funny.

United already has a bunch of young players that, coupled with veterans for leadership, could do quite well and strengthen the back line:

Craig Cathcart and Gerard Pique can both play in the middle. Granted they are both lacking in a lot of big game experience, but I would like to see them get their chance to make their mark on the team. Jonny Evans on the other hand, does have the experience and seems ready to challenge for a spot in the middle.

Kieran Lee, Phil Bardsley, and can play in the outside back positions - primarily on the right as Patrice Evra should always start on the left. It is time to start preparing one or two players to replace Gary Neville. If the injuries last season are any indication of things to come, Neville could be slowing down and United would be wise to have a successor in place.

Whether Rio Ferdinand stays or goes, Manu needs to allow the youngsters in the back the opportunity to prove whether they are ready to play. If they are, play them!

Nah i think Rio is a good player he should stay Carick should be gone!

While I agree that Michael Carrick could have been a bigger scoring threat, I think it is crazy to underestimate his contributions to the Championship season.

I’ll be the first critic to say that Carrick had many games that he did not factor into the game (first to mind is the FA Cup Final where some would argue he was useless) - his signing costs would have you believe that you should expect an impact player every game. Having said that, I believe that the Reds would not have been crowned champions had it not been for Carrick. He had great vision as a passer in the midfield position - especially in the opossing team’s half.

Only Paul Scholes surpassed Carrick in terms of productive ball distribution, but obviously Michael doesn’t have the same liabitlity when it comes to tackling. ;)

True :)

but still think Rio should stay!

Rio fits the classic description of a good defender:
no news is good news.

For the most part he does his job thanklessly, and intercepts the vast majority of crosses, through-balls, etc, with silent finesse…

Who would replace him? You only had to look at his face when he scored the own goal at Portsmouth to see how disappointed he was. He’s a red through and through nowadays.

If he leaves for Chelsea, as many have claimed he would, then I’ll eat my deerstalker….

Rio should stay if for no other reason than to mentor Evans and Pique for a few years because God knows Vidic couldn’t seeing as that he can barely speak two words of English. As far as Carrick goes, it is a fact that Scholes would not have had the kind of season he did without Michael. The same can be said for Ronaldo and Giggs, though to a lesser degree. How many times did Carrick get the ball in the Man U box and start the counter attack with his passes? How many times did he keep the ball in the opponents’ half when it was knocked out. The fact is that he adds the element of stability on the pitch and allows offensive players like Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs, and Scholes to get the ball in without having to drop back and defend all the time. My prediction, however, is that he wil become more of an offensive player this year with the addition of Hargreaves because Owen will be the one droping back to defend while Carrick can come up and distribute the ball from further in the opponents’ half.

I agree with Stephen in the previous post. Carrick played an integral part in the side this year. While I agree that he should have been more of a scoring threat he did help keep the pressure on opposing defenses. As for Rio, he definitely needs to stay. Review the tape of opponent’s corners and you’ll see big Rio right there in the middle of the action. Besides, somebody needs to help Vidic with his English.

There is no way United should get rid of Rio. He makes a few mistakes a season compare to hundreds of tackles. He is an awesome defender.

I agree the young lads need to start coming through but they need to be ready. Fergie is great with young lads, if they are ready, they will get their chance.

Rio is a fantastic defender. Through all of last season, he and Vidic (when both healthy) put in performances that many of the older bunch claimed harkened back to the Brucy-Pallister combination in the early nienties. Both Rio and Vidic are solid center-backs, and have gelled well after Vidic’s inital wobbly-legegd perfomances. To get rid of Rio would be a huge loss, not only to the starting 11 but also to the youngsters coming through. Rio is a fine example to any defender in the world. While Vidic is tactically a younger carbon-copy of Rio, it is true he doesn’t have the same verbal (a.k.a. English) qualities that Rio does. He puts in professional performances week in and week out and selling him would be a huge loss to the club.

As to the Carrick comments, I would have to say he is a younger Scholes, minus perhaps the prolific goal scoring ability. Watching him is a joy, his passing is second only to Scholes in the Premiership. The abilities of Carrick far outweigh any shortcomings he has, and when Scholes retires (which realistically unfortunately could be at the end of this coming season) having Carrick will be a huge plus.

he should work harder next season if he intended to stay further

Comment by stephen on July 9, 2007, 4:16 am

Work harder? Perhaps you have been watching a different United in the past sir. Neither he nor Vidic tear the turf as some other defenders in the premiership may, but look at their contribution to the position they are supposed to play. Either one or the other should be sitting in the back at all times. And one of them always is. Constantly last season Rio was the last defender back and always (well, perhaps not always) saved Van Der Saar a much worse situation.

As for his workrate, it is overall phenominal. No he may not run the etire game like Rooney and Ronaldo, but it’s because he doesn’t have to. United’s attack is strong enough that the center backs can play deeper. However, one must also remember Rio’s attacking prowress. I for one look back with a grin upon his strike against Liverpool.

No he may not run for 90 minutes every match. So what? He doesn’t have to. United have arguably the strongest back five of any team in the premiership. Running isn’t everything. If it was, well, he’d fail in track and field, but he’s still a damn good defender.

Rio stays..there are, what, five central defenders better than him on the planet, so who would you replace him with and how?
Carrick was brilliant in his first season, apart from a few lathargic moments, and is going to be a world beater as the next few seasons develop. The English Requeleme but better!
With Owen coming in and MAYBE Tevez plus the two Portugese speakers (ofcourse unknown to any of us really so we’ll have to see about their contribution) this next United team could be an all-time great.

Rio Ferdinand is a good player overall. I watch games and I dont think hes lazy. LOL i also play video games and he Rocks so I really like Rio and I want to be as good of a defender as him when i grow older.

Comment by aguy from the US on August 9, 2007, 9:26 am

This is absolute nonsense.

Rio is our best defender. He’s technically one of the most talented and skillful defenders in Britain. He’s not a traditional British centre-half. He has a continental feel. He can hit 50/60 yard balls and has pace to burn (same can’t be said for his English counterpart - Terry). He’s one of the quickest at United. He’s also comfortable in possession and makes difficult and dangerous situations look easy. He perfectly compliments Vidic who is more your traditional British defender (he does the dirty stuff). You need both.

The only problem I have with Rio is his occasional lapse in concentration. He knows how good he is. But he nailed it last season when we had the best defence in the league. And he’s nailing it this season too. With so many 1-0s it tells you that we have the best defence in England, maybe Europe. And we’re not like Chelsea who play a defensive way with 2/3 holding midfielders protecting the back 4. We play 442. Last season we played without any tackler in the 11 so the back 4 was much, much, much more exposed than at Chelsea, yet we still had a better defensive record than them. That tells you that our defence, led by Rio, is fucking class. World class. The best, right now.

If you wanna moan about shite defenders, watch Valencia’s goal in the Champions League against Chelsea yesterday. Terry got done for pace and Valencia went 1-up.
