Am I the only one that thinks Manchester United have not only over-paid for Owen Hargreaves, but that they have better options at the position? The Canadian born defensive mid-fielder has made 7 appearances in 14 league games and I can only think of one good game that he’s had — off the top of my head I cannot remember the opponent (perhaps someone can refresh my memory).
Aside from that one game that stood out to me, his performance has been shocking considering the money paid and the expectations coming into the season.
Some questions / things to consider:
- Does Carrick play better with Hargreaves on the bench? I was thinking today how much better Carrick played. He made some very effective passes, moved around well, made himself available, and was a big part of the game. Versus his performance last weekend at Bolton when he was paired with Hargreaves and entirely ineffective.
- Ronaldo has had only two more appearances. Can you say he’s as important to the team as Ronny? On the surface this sounds like an unfair comparison, but think in terms of work-rate and energy expended, and how the team around him plays. Consider his play in his position against any of the regular starters. Does he stack up?
- Does Manchester have a better option at the position? Certainly not Fletcher who was pathetic today, but Anderson would get my vote as a better alternative. A midfield of Ronaldo, Carrick, Anderson, and Giggs (spelled by Nani) would strike fear into most teams.
Now don’t get me wrong, I believe he provides great depth and is a useful player on the roster. My point is that he should not be considered part of the “best 11″ for United and should be utilized as a substitute instead of a starter. What do you think?
I don’t really agree with you on Hargreaves. I think he is a top quality player who has failed to get going this season because injury.
Carrick was anonymous in the first against Sporting and only got better as United reverted to 4-4-2. Anderson would be wasted in Hargreaves position and is the long term replacement for Scholes. Long term I see the midfield being Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson and Hargreaves.
I agree that Carrick plays better with Hargreaves on the bench, to be honest I do not think Hargreaves has done anything this season. I am willing to give him more time but eventually he is going to have to stay fir and contribute on a regular basis.
On the topic of Rooney, he is the most improtant player to the team. Ronaldo is fantastic but he tries to do to much at times. Thank god he finally hit a free kick, I honestly cannot remember the last time he made a keeper work much less score.
I say just give him some time. He’s still not fully fit and i think he needs some time to settle in.
alright lads i think hargreaves is going to be a super player for us he keeps going for 90 mins and never gives the ball away and when the big european away games come up we will see his real value ps anderson is going to be a class act
United’s best midfield is Hargreaves and Anderson. Hargreaves is a tremendous player. My only concern is the persistent injury problems he is having. Alarm bells start to ring when players become plagued by injury e.g., Gary Neville, Louis Saha, Ole, and so on. Subject to Hargreaves being fit, he’ll prove to be a great acquisition for United.
The problem for United with a midfield of Scholes and Carrick is that against the best opposition it lacks pace and good defensive ability (e.g. the games against Arsenal, Milan and Chelsea last season and virtually every away fixture in the Champions League last year when United lost 4 out of 6 games away from home). Anderson and Hargreaves are a more effective unit.
Hargreaves is truly a world class holding midfielder. He won the sprints competition at the ManU pre-season training sessions and is the fittest player on the squad.
He is a player that any club in the world would love to have.
