Rio is our best defender. He's technically one of the most talented and skillful defenders in Britain. He's not a traditional British centre-half. He has a continental feel. He can hit 50/60 yard balls and has pace to burn (same can't be said for his English counterpart - Terry). He's one of the quickest at United. He's also comfortable in possession and makes difficult and dangerous situations look easy. He perfectly compliments Vidic who is more your traditional British defender (he does the dirty stuff). You need both. The only problem I have with Rio is his occasional lapse in concentration. He knows how good he is. But he nailed it last season when we had the best defence in the league. And he's nailing it this season too. With so many 1-0s it tells you that we have the best defence in England, maybe Europe. And we're not like Chelsea who play a defensive way with 2/3 holding midfielders protecting the back 4. We play 442. Last season we played without any tackler in the 11 so the back 4 was much, much, much more exposed than at Chelsea, yet we still had a better defensive record than them. That tells you that our defence, led by Rio, is fucking class. World class. The best, right now. If you wanna moan about shite defenders, watch Valencia's goal in the Champions League against Chelsea yesterday. Terry got done for pace and Valencia went 1-up. This is absolute nonsense.

Neither he nor Vidic tear the turf as some other defenders in the premiership may, but look at their contribution to the position they are supposed to play. Either one or the other should be sitting in the back at all times. And one of them always is. Constantly last season Rio was the last defender back and always (well, perhaps not always) saved Van Der Saar a much worse situation. As for his workrate, it is overall phenominal. No he may not run the etire game like Rooney and Ronaldo, but it's because he doesn't have to. United's attack is strong enough that the center backs can play deeper. To get rid of Rio would be a huge loss, not only to the starting 11 but also to the youngsters coming through. Rio is a fine example to any defender in the world. While Vidic is tactically a younger carbon-copy of Rio, it is true he doesn't have the same verbal (a.k.a. English) qualities that Rio does. He puts in professional performances week in and week out and selling him would be a huge loss to the club. As to the Carrick comments, I would have to say he is a younger Scholes, minus perhaps the prolific goal scoring ability. Watching him is a joy, his passing is second only to Scholes in the Premiership. The abilities of Carrick far outweigh any shortcomings he has, and when Scholes retires (which realistically unfortunately could be at the end of this coming season) having Carrick will be a huge plus. As for Rio, he definitely needs to stay. Review the tape of opponent's corners and you'll see big Rio right there in the middle of the action. Besides, somebody needs to help Vidic with his English.
