It was Arsenal that kept their number one spot on top of the Premiership table after Gallas scored a late equalizer. The game ended in a draw at 2-2.
Although both Arsenal and Manchester United are tied on 27 points it is the fact that Arsenal’s goal difference is more in their favor. Arsene Wenger’s side are still unbeaten, a feat only equaled by Liverpool at this stage. Arsenal extended their unbeaten run to 18 games in all competitions.
The game started very slowly, what could you expect in one of the most anticipated an talked about encounters of the season. The Emirates stadium saw an own goal by the home side’s captain William Gallas that must have crushed a faithful crowd. The own goal came after it was Wayne Rooney that took a shot and Gallas tried to turn the ball that only succeeded in going into the back of his own net.
Arsenal came back in the 47th minute to equalize with a Cesc Fabregas goal after he received a cutback pass from Bacary Sagna to put the ball into the bottom corner for his 10th goal of the season.
It was only in the 82nd minute that saw Manchester United regain the lead with a brilliant run by let-back Patrice Evra into the penalty area and unselfishly passed inside to a open Ronaldo that took his shot in front of an open goal.
It was Gallas that had the last laugh when he put Arsenal level 2-2, turning a mis hit by Theo Walcott’s and shooting the ball in the back of the net. This might have redeemed him for the own goal earlier in the game. The pace of the game in the latter parts of both halves were really entertaining and the old cliché holds so true when you say “football was the winner in the end”
Sir Alex Ferguson said: “I can’t believe it, we’ve thrown it away, I though we had done it but this is football. Arsenal had some good possession, but I think we had the better chances. We were controlling the game.”
It is going to be a great race toward the end of the Premiership.
