It has been reported that Manchester United are offering Tottenham £27.5m for the Bulgarian striker, Dimitar Berbatov.
Tottenham stand to make a substantial profit after signing Berbatov for £10.9m from Bayern Leverkusen last summer. This, in addition to gaining Louis Saha in the deal, could make the offer more than they can refuse. (approximately £39m in value)
Berbatov scored 24 goals in all competitions in his first season in English football.
This would double Spurs previous “high water mark” of £18.5m for a player (Michael Carrick) — also to Manchester United.

If there is one player that would make absolutely no sense on the Man Utd roster, it’s Berbatov. What Manchester needs is a young striker that would fit in seemlessly with Rooney and Ronaldo, not a veteran that has already developed his own style of play like Berbatov. The rumor mill over the past few days has claimed that Ferguson has made a 10 million pound bid (that may have been upped) for Fabio Quagliarella of Sampdoria. From what I have seen of him, he is a tremendously talented striker with loads of potential, though I think his stock is a bit inflated after the Euro qualifyer vs. Lithuania. Other than Qagliarella, Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Fernando Torres have been the most commonly-linked strikers. Huntelaar would be like having a younger van Nistelrooy, which would obviously be a good thing. He is a talented young striker who, like Quagliarella, can play very well with his back to goal. Torres is, in my opinion, the most talented of the group. Although he is only 23, he has about 6 years of experience in Spain. If Torres were brought to Old Trafford, the sky is the limit for Man U. He is the most mobile of the strikers I listed and would allow Manchester to play a Total Football-like style, much like Barca. Moreover, bringing him in would allow Man U to build its team around this style for the next few years because none of the new offensive group (Ronaldo, Rooney, Anderson, and Nani) would be above the age of 23. However, his price tag of about 22-24 million pounds will scare off Man U and he will most likely go to Anfield. The only way Manchester can afford him is if they hold a mini fire-sale and get rid of Saha, Silvestre, Heinze, Smith, O’Shea (the most inconsistent player in the EPL), and Brown. All these positions can be filled in by youngsters like Rossi, Pique, Evans, Bardsley, Cathcart, Lee, and Dong. I would also explore selling Park as Fletcher and Eagles can fill his roles as a midfielder and a winger.
