In the final minute of normal time, Carlos Tevez used his strength to turn and bundle his way through Chris Basham and Sebastien Puygrenier and cross the ball to an unmarked Berbatov whose diving header beat Jussi Jaaskelainen to see them go home with a win despite an unconvincing performance.

Goals from Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov moved United up to third – above Aston Villa on goal difference – and five points behind leaders Liverpool with two games in hand. They will move above second-placed Chelsea with a win over Wigan Athletic on Wednesday.

Aston Villa will be hosting the Red Devils this weekend. Untied will be with out Berbatov do to a thigh problem but both Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand are in good shape and could return to the starting lineup. Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes are still sidelined.
