Rio to captain England

Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand was confirmed as England captain ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro on Wednesday.

Ferdinand will reclaim the captains armband from Steven Gerrard, who captained England to successive victories over Bulgaria and Switzerland while Rio Ferdinand was absent due to injury

“I didn’t know if I was going to be captain or not. I was more concerned about being in the squad and being fit.” Rio told Sky Sports. “The manager is always analysing you physically and mentally and you’ve got to perform. He has seen me as the right person and I’m delighted with that.”

Since Ferdinand became captain of England in February he has missed 8 of 10 international matches, including the World Cup

“The first 48 hours when I got the injury in South Africa were the worst in terms of thinking of the consequences and analysing it, Missing the World Cup was a disaster for me but you’ve got to dust yourself down and get on with it.”

Was there any other real choice for England’s captain?

Ferdinand to Appeal Ban

Manchester United are about to take a calculated risk by appealing the fourth game of Rio Ferdinand’s 4 game ban.

Initially Rio was banned for 3 games for his violent conduct in the recent game against Hull City, which was extended to 4 because of the “frivolous” nature of the appeal. See, Rio Ferdinand Banned for 3, Wait 4 Games.

Manchester boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, is going to ask the FA to set aside the last match that was added in attempt to get the central defender available to play against Everton on February 20.

The FA have the ability to add a 5th game to the ban if it chooses to do so. Let’s hope they don’t see this appeal as frivolous an try to teach Sir Alex a lesson by increasing the ban to its maximum.

3 United Players not going anywhere

Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand, and Wes Brown have all agreed to extend their stay at Old Trafford, Sir Alex confirmed at his weekly press conference.

Of the 3 players, Wes Brown was the only one Sir Alex was uncertain about. There was talk earlier in the season that Brown was not content, financially speaking, but like Sir Alex said “There’s no other club for Wes Brown….” “…He’s a Manchester United player. We were always quietly confident he would sign.”

Well it’s a good thing Sir Alex was confident, because I already had suggestions for a replacement.
We were given an idea of what Rio would earn, no word yet on Carrick and Brown’s new salaries.

Rio could be fit for Champions league 2nd Leg

Rio could be fit to play in Wednesdays Champions League match. Rio limped off the field in the 70th minute of Sundays match against Middlesbrough. But a scan on Monday confirmed Ferdinand did not break his foot. Sir Alex will make his decision Wednesday morning on whether Rio will play. Both Gary Neville and Mikael Silvestre are both fit according to Sir Alex who said “Both won’t start, but one may start depending on Rio’s situation.”

Should Gary Neville and Silvestre be considered for such a match? Both are just coming back from very serious injuries and Roma’s offense are very quick.
